IPL 2024: Sunil Gavaskar hints new destructive opening pair for Lucknow Super Giants

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar recently mentioned that Lucknow Super Giants have organized their batting order for the upcoming IPL 2024 season. He proposed that Nicholas Pooran should bat higher than KL Rahul at no.3, with the latter taking the no.4 position.

KL Rahul is eyeing a place in the T20 World Cup 2024 by batting at no. 4 for the Super Giants, as the tournament is set to commence shortly after the IPL. Devdutt Padikkal, acquired from Rajasthan Royals (RR), is anticipated to open the batting for the Lucknow-based team, forming a partnership with either Kyle Mayers or Quinton de Kock at the top. This strategic move would enable Lucknow to reinforce their bowling attack by including an overseas pacer.

In a conversation on Star Sports, Gavaskar shared his viewpoint on the LSG batting lineup. He stated, “They form a formidable team, consistently exceeding expectations. Sustaining this level of performance could place them consistently on the outskirts of the top four. KL Rahul might assume the No. 4 batting position, while Nicholas Pooran could handle No. 3.”

The former India opener urged LSG to position Pooran at 3, emphasizing Pooran’s destructive potential, especially when given more overs. Gavaskar observed Pooran’s outstanding performance in Major League Cricket, underscoring the need for him to face additional deliveries.

Gavaskar is optimistic about LSG’s batting lineup in the upcoming season, noting that Quinton de Kock, the designated opening batsman, may be accompanied by recent addition Devdutt Padikkal. While their batting lineup seems well-established, Gavaskar sees room for improvement in the bowling department to secure their position in the top four.

In the middle order, Marcus Stoinis and Krunal Pandya are expected to bat alongside Rahul and Pooran. The team also has the option of including Deepak Hooda, Ayush Badoni, and Prerak Mankad for the remaining batting positions.

Gavaskar expressed hope for the LSG franchise to reach the playoffs. With Justin Langer as their motivator, known for playing with passion, Gavaskar believes the players have the potential to channel that spirit for Lucknow, enhancing their chances of success.

Recalling the previous season, the Mumbai Indians defeated the Lucknow Super Giants in the eliminator, and the team secured the 3rd position overall.
